Jim Broadbent appeared in numerous plays and films and was the voice of Vroomfondel in the BBC radio series version of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. He has appeared in the film Time Bandits and played Bridget's dad in Bridget Jones's Diary. He also appeared in the small biopic Iris, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as devoted husband John Bayley to Judi Dench's Iris Murdoch, the British novelist who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. The film hit home with Jim, since his own mother had passed away from Alzheimer's in 1995. His Oscar for the film made him one of only 12 actors at the time, to win the Award for playing a real person who was still alive at the evening of the Award ceremony.
