Local Southend on Sea interest, Alderman William Miles, OBE, CBE, JP, Mayor of Southend-on-Sea (1922-1924, 1936-1937 & 1939-1945) A interesting collection of Historic memorabilia from probably one of the longest serving Mayor's of Southend on Sea. Items included within this lot: Winston Churchill framed autographed letter from Whitehall place, 28th December 1918 addressed to Mr W Miles Esq, I have had much pleasure in recommending to the"Prime Minister (David Lloyd George) that you should be appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and I am glad to learn that the King has approved the recommendation.Pray accept my hearty congratulations on this recognition of the valuable services rendered by you to the state".Together with Cased O.B.E (Order of the British Empire) and titled Decree from George VI, C.B.E (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) plus accompanying letter from St James palace, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Silver gilt and Enamelled brooch awarded by Southend Council to Alderman Miles for Long service.Garrard & Co Silver Gilt Enamelled brooch for the Mayoress of Southend on Sea, Mrs L Miles, Silver gilt and enamel presentation key, awarded to Alderman Miles for the opening of the New Court house, Southend.5 Press photos of King George V and Aldermann Miles during the Kings Visit to Southend Pier 1921 and 2 photos of His Majesty's 177ft sailing yacht, HMY Britannia.Documents included. Signed letter from Aneurin Bevan, Minister of health, dated January 1946. Congratulations for receiving the C.B.E and further letters of correspondence from local business heads including Eric Kirkham Cole (EKCO Radio).A hand written and drawn velum scroll presented to Alderman W. Miles with the proclamation of Honorary Freeman to the County of Southend Council on Sea.This lot is part of a deceased estate of which no family members remain.
