New Opportunities mini elephant Artist: Rocchina Rizzo The design for New Opportunities is based on a tattoo style as in Southend we have many amazingly talented tattoo studios and artists. It is a big part of the culture here. Now that Southend has become a city it has created new opportunites and growth for individuals and local businesses. Rocchina wanted to focus on a subject that symbolised new life and growth, therefore focused on butterflies and moths along with blooming flowers.

Thankfully, bear baiting and dancing bears are banned nowadays. The design is a nod to the days of circus animals being made to perform and the abuse they underwent at the hands of mankind. For children it is a colourful, fun bright design of a clown elephant.

The design features the most iconic land mammal, the African Elephant, which is sadly endangered from global warming and lack of food and water.

Sharman the Starman - Sponsor: Gateway Group Artist: Catherine Ullo Catherine has always been fascinated by space travel and exploration which is why her design is astronaut themed and based off British astronaut suits. She has named the sculpture Sharman the Starman to pay tribute to Helen Sharman, the first British person in space. To add to the whimsy of the design, the ears are reminiscent of galaxies, stars, and planets captured by the Hubble and James Webb Telescopes.

Fast forward a few years and Southend-on-sea is home to a new, rather smart looking electric train. Sir David is painted with heritage green, this pays homage to his past. He spends his days taking his friends up and down the pier and recharges at night.
