A rare and fine quality bronze sculpture in the form of Alfred the Great by Sir William Hamo Thornycroft R.A. (1850-1925) standing on a red marble base and signed Hamo Thornycroft and standing approximately 55cm tall including the base. The only other known example of a Thornycroft sculpture of Alfred the Great stands seventeen feet tall in Winchester. Hamo was a Royal Academy gold medalist and is responsible for a number of London monuments including the statue of Oliver Cromwell outside Westminster Palace.
